Cologne Trip Oct 25-30th 2013

This is a fantastic opportunity for current Yr9 pupils who have opted for GCSE Art.

The Art Department is organising an Art and Design Study Tour of the major Art and Design museums and galleries in Cologne, Germany. The purpose of this tour is to support pupils in their studies of Art and Design and to enhance their understanding and enjoyment of Art in general.

The proposed tour will take place during October Half Term 2013 leaving early on Friday 25 October 2013 and returning on Wednesday 30 October 2013.

Cologne is home to a fantastic collection of galleries exhibiting works from the past and present.  Galleries we intend to visit include the Museum Ludwig, Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum, Kätthe Kollwitz Museum, Photographic Collection of the SK Cultural Foundation as well as possibly the sports museum and the chocolate museum. Opportunities to make drawings, take photographs and keep notes will be available and all work produced will be included in Coursework/portfolio submissions.

Pupils will be expected to keep a visual diary of their journey and experiences, they will also be encouraged to use social media in a creative way by interacting with the swanmoreart twitter feed to express opinions on artworks and our Instagram account to photograph the city in an interesting and exciting way. It is our intention to exhibit the work created during the visit upon our return.

Portsmouth Photography walk/workshop

I am delighted to announce details of our first organised workshop with Strong Island media.

On Saturday 20th April we have arranged a Photography walk for pupils to learn the basics of handling a DSLR camera. This session will also include feedback and technical advice on how to improve your photography in a number of areas…details below :)

The students will meet at the D-Day Museum carpark on Southsea seafront at 11am and from there walk to Gunwharf. We will stop off at different points on the way to photograph particular scenes, objects, etc. The route will include Southsea Castle, The Bandstand, The Victory Monument, Clarence Pier, The Spur Redoubt & Nelson’s Bridge, Garrison Church, The Square & Round Towers & The Hotwalls, Old Portsmouth and The Camber. Depending on time one or more of these locations may be skipped or other locations on the walk included.

There will be a focus upon composition, textures and use of depth of field to show mood and create atmosphere within your images.

The walks end with a late lunch at 2pm at Pizza Express where a buffet will be provided. The cost of the buffet is included in the cost of the workshop walk. After lunch the students will pick their favourite photos from their cameras and share with fellow student and staff for an informal critique on technical skills used, compositional techniques, etc.

At 3pm the students will be taken to the pickup point at Gunwharf ready for them to be picked up by their parents.

Spaces are limited to a maximum number of 15. We will be organising more of these if demand is there…letters will be out soon :)

Watch this space for details of when the letters will be issued. :)

Snow Day work 21/1/13(for all year groups)…enjoy :)

Yr 7: Set up a small still life containing some interesting objects. Produce a line drawing from this. You must look closely at shapes and contours so that you record what you see accurately. If it helps, take a photograph so that you can also work from a ‘flat’ image. You should spend 1 hour on this task.

Yr 8. There is a snow day task for you on the Maps & Journeys prezi here http://tinyurl.com/aqlweln

Yr9. Research one of the following Pop Artists. Collect at least 5 images, print out and bring in for your next Art lesson. Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Peter Blake, Robert Indiana or Claes Oldenburg.

Yr10: You should complete an hour of work in your sketchbook. There are various tasks that need completing on the prezi…take some pictures and upload to your Tumblr, set up a Tumblr, annotate work…check the deadlines, that should help you!

Year 11: You must be working on final development & mock final pieces. All information for this is in the Prezi, and most likely in your sketchbooks. If your sketchbook is in a classroom do not be idle…take some photos, record your day. Look for an artist who’s work you like as you’ll need to keep your eyes open for your forthcoming exam paper :)
